Last goodbye - Prof. Zbigniew Szyndlar

We regret to inform you of the death of our colleague Professor Zbigniew Szyndlar (1952-2026). We will remember as a kind man who could combine scientific passion with the great curiosity of the world. Throughout his scientific life, he was associated with the Institute of Systematics and Evolution of Animals of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Krakow, where he developed his passion for research on fossil and modern reptiles. From 1997 to 2012, he served in the Institute as Deputy Director of Scientific Affairs. He was most fascinated by fossil snakes – the niche theme, yet in his publications he gained life. He was passionate about the findings of millions of years ago, which were something very special and important to him. His publications are an important reference point for all researchers in this field. The doctoral dissertation published in 1984 entitled “Fossil snakes from Poland” remains the most quoted work. In later years, he published many fossil studies of snakes from European countries from positions dating from early oligocene to pliocene.
But Zbyszek is not just a scientist. He had something in him – he was interested in nature in a broad sense, liked travel, as well as conversations that did not necessarily end on professional topics. He was an avid sailor and author of photographs for the film "Sphinksy, boa and iguanas" (Interpress-Film, 1976), shot during a student trip to South America. He often surprised listeners with a specific sense of humor and distance to himself. At work he was specific and factual, but at the same time he could always count on his help and a good word.
He did not put himself above others, despite his vast knowledge. Rather, he inspired – calmly, without imposing himself, showing that true passion does not need publicity. The seemingly rough was actually very kind and helpful. For many of us, he was not only a coworker and a colleague, but also someone who reminded us of why science was actually done. He left more than his publications and research. He left the memory of an authentic, committed and devoted man of his passion. And that's what we're going to miss the most.
