About the Institute
The Institute of Systematics and Evolution of Animals of the Polish Academy of Sciences was established in 1989 from the Department of Systematic and Experimental Zoology of the Polish Academy of Sciences.

However, the history of the Institute dates back to 1865, when the Physiographic Commission founded by the Krakow Scientific Society was established. At the same time, the Natural Museum was created, under the original name of the Physiographic Museum, which is today an integral part of our Institute.

The mission of the Institute is to conduct scientific research (taxonomic, phylogenetic, genetic, paleontological, biogeographical and related) on the evolution and biodiversity of the animal world and to collect, store and share zoological scientific collections and promote science according to the best standards.
